Open Access and Creative Commons

Open Access journal articles, conference papers etc.

There are an increasing number of journals freely accessible via the web. These are known as "open access" journals:

  • Some of these, like the PLoS (Public Library of Science) journals, are published directly onto the web and are immediately available.
  • Other journals, like those available via the the Highwire Press site are sometimes not able to be viewed freely until a set time after initial publication (this usually ranges from 6 to 24 months).
  • Some sites, like BioMed Central, include a mixture of freely available and subscription journals.
  • DOAJ, Directory of Open Access Journals, provides access to journals across a range of discipline areas.
