Call numbers

A call number is used to:

  • ensure resources on the same topic are located together

  • indicate the location of a resource with the Library collection

A call number can be divided into different parts, for example, call number 155.9 25 can be divided as follows

The Dewey number 155.9 indicates that the subject content relates to environmental psychology. The running number, 25, indicates the resource is the twenty-fifth resource the Library has acquired on this subject.

Sometimes the running number will have a year appended to it, for example:

          155.9  25/2003

This occurs when the Library acquires a newer edition of a resource.  The year of publication is added to the running number to indicate that more than one edition is available.
