Finding Government Information

This guide provides links to Australian and international government websites, other sources of government information, and search tips on how to find specific government information.

Using a domain search

Most search engines provide the ability to limit a search to a specific domain opens in a new window. When searching for government information, limiting searches to government domains is a useful strategy to eliminate unwanted information from other domains e.g. commercial websites.

The table below provides a list of sample domains to use when searching for information relating to particular governments:

Country

Domain

Australia

.gov.au

America .gov
United Kingdom   .gov.uk
Canada

.gc.ca

Search engines that allow you to search by domain include:

Using a search box

Browsing an entire government website for specific information can be very time-consuming.

Many government websites contain a search box in which you can type, for example, the name of a specific department or agency.

It is then possible to continue your search for information published by that department or agency.

Using Google Advanced Search

Google Advanced Search can help you find specific government information by allowing you to use domain searching as well as other limiting strategies. The example below shows how you would search for information on the Web about health and safety in nursing homes, excluding information about food safety, from the Queensland Government website.
